I usually kick things off with a reading. I find sometimes that working in medicine can be like looking at one of those Magic Eye drawings. You have to cross your eyes in order to see the hidden image clearly, but in the process, the rest of the world goes blurry. Sometimes a good piece of writing or a sweet melody can be just what you need to get your eyes to stop straining. To help you see the whole wide world again more clearly. So speaking of drawing, I had Terrance Hayes’ new book of poems, “How to Be Drawn” on my mind. (Full disclosure: the story of how I came to possess this particular copy of Hayes’ poems is actually the story of my dad approaching him after a reading in Philly and brazenly asking him not only to sign a copy for me but also to by my mentor. In other words, it’s the story of how your dad can embarrass you, with perfectly good intentions of course, at any age). Anyway, I felt like we needed to hear some Terrance Hayes because of all the discussions on race and identity that have been happening in the media and also close to home, like at our Health Policy Journal Club earlier this week. Also, because people should recognize (and many of you already did!) when there is a true genius in the midst of our own academic community. Also, because, well, just watch this.
